Background of the Study
School sports participation has long been recognized as a vehicle for instilling ethical values in students. In Dutse, where cultural and religious norms strongly influence behavior, participation in organized sports provides an opportunity for students to develop virtues such as fairness, teamwork, respect, and discipline (Abdulrahman, 2023). Through sports, students learn the importance of adhering to rules, understanding the consequences of their actions, and exhibiting sportsmanship in both victory and defeat (Suleiman, 2024). Coaches and sports educators often serve as role models, demonstrating ethical conduct that students can emulate in their daily lives (Hassan, 2025). Participation in school sports can also help mitigate antisocial behaviors by providing a structured environment that promotes positive interactions and a sense of accountability (Ibrahim, 2023). In Dutse, school sports are increasingly being viewed not only as a means to physical fitness but also as a critical component of character education. The lessons learned on the playing field often translate into improved ethical decision-making and behavior in academic and social settings. Recent initiatives have focused on integrating ethical discussions into sports programs, aiming to reinforce the values of integrity, honesty, and respect (Yakubu, 2024). However, despite these efforts, there remains a need for systematic research on how sports participation influences ethical values among students, particularly in contexts where traditional values are deeply embedded. This study seeks to explore this relationship by examining the mechanisms through which sports participation contributes to the development of ethical values. By doing so, it aims to provide a framework that can be utilized by educators, coaches, and policy-makers to further integrate ethics into sports programs, ensuring that the benefits of sports extend beyond physical health to the moral and social development of students (Chinedu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of school sports to promote ethical values, many educators in Dutse have observed that students’ ethical behavior remains inconsistent. While some students exhibit high levels of integrity and respect as a result of their sports involvement, others continue to display behaviors such as cheating, aggression, and disrespect (Olawale, 2023). The disparity in ethical development raises concerns about the factors that influence the effectiveness of sports programs in instilling positive values. Factors such as the quality of coaching, the structure of the sports program, and the level of emphasis on ethical training appear to play a critical role. In many cases, the lack of standardized ethical guidelines within sports curricula means that the potential benefits of sports participation on ethical development are not fully realized (Amin, 2024). Additionally, cultural influences and external pressures can sometimes undermine the lessons taught in sports settings. Without a systematic approach to integrating ethical training into sports programs, the opportunity to nurture responsible and ethical behavior in students may be lost (Bello, 2025). This study aims to address this gap by examining how participation in school sports influences ethical values among students in Dutse. It will identify the key factors that enhance or impede the development of ethical behavior through sports participation, and propose interventions that can help standardize ethical training in sports curricula. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for creating a more effective educational framework that supports the moral and social development of students through extracurricular activities (Nasir, 2023).

• H₃: Integrating formal ethical training into sports curricula enhances students’ overall ethical development.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of school sports in shaping ethical values among students in Dutse. The findings will offer practical recommendations for educators, coaches, and policy-makers to integrate ethical training into sports programs effectively. By promoting positive ethical behavior, the study aims to contribute to the overall moral and social development of students, thereby creating a more respectful and responsible school culture. These insights will serve as a valuable resource for future initiatives aimed at strengthening character education through extracurricular activities (Sani, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating the influence of school sports participation on students' ethical values in Dutse Local Government Area. It does not extend to other subjects or regions, focusing solely on the ethical outcomes associated with sports participation.
